Updates and custom code

Keep Datum up to date, change code safely, and know what our support covers.

Update Datum

When a new version of Datum is out, Shopify shows a notice on the theme in Online Store > Themes.

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Find the update notice on your Datum theme and click it.
  3. Shopify adds the new version to your theme library as a new, unpublished theme. Your theme settings and section content are carried over.
  4. Click Customize on the new version and check your pages.
  5. When everything looks right, click Publish.

Your old version stays in your theme library, so you can go back if you need to.

Changes you made to the theme code are not carried over to the new version. Before you update, note which files you changed and copy those changes across yourself, or ask the person who made them.

Coding changes

You can edit Datum's code, but coding changes are not included in our support. We cannot help with code you or someone else changed, and changed files can stop working after an update.

Before you change any code:

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Click the three dots (or Actions) next to Datum.
  3. Click Duplicate.
  4. Make your changes on the copy, and test it before you publish.

For custom work, we recommend hiring a Shopify Partner. Find one in the Shopify Partner directory.

Many changes need no code at all. Before you edit code, check the sections, theme settings, app blocks and the Custom Liquid section.

Change theme text

You can change most text, like button labels, without editing code:

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Click the three dots (or Actions) next to Datum.
  3. Click Edit default theme content.
  4. Search for the text and change it.
